Act I follows the 19th-century French pointillist painter Georges Seurat as he struggles to create his masterpiece, “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte.” As he obsessively works on his art, he grapples with the balance between his artistic vision and personal relationships, particularly with his lover Dot. Act II fast-forwards to the 20th century, where Seurat’s descendant, also named George, is a contemporary artist facing similar challenges of creativity and connection. Through innovative storytelling and Sondheim’s evocative music, “Sunday in the Park with George” explores themes of legacy, the nature of art, and the enduring human need for connection.
